Vitamin B3, also known as niacin or niacinamide, is known for its many health benefits from a nutritional standpoint, such as improving heart disease, lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of cognitive decline, and providing a boost in energy. Now, recent studies have shown that vitamin B3 also contains certain antioxidative properties that can treat aging skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
In the human body, there are two compounds responsible for cell growth known as NADH and NADPH that help protect skin against external factors that can contribute to aging and wrinkles. As we grow older, our levels of NADH and NADPH may decline, especially if we lack vitamin B3 in our diets. However, new evidence shows that applying vitamin B3 topically to the skin may help reverse aging and wrinkles, and preserve our body’s levels of NADH and NADPH.
In addition to repairing wrinkles, a series of clinical studies have shown that the topical application of vitamin B3 could also help repair other types of skin blemishes and disorders, such as redness, yellowing, hyperpigmentation, and blotchiness. A study conducted by researchers at Proctor and Gamble set out to test the effects of niacinamide on the skin of 50 women between the ages of 40 and 60 throughout a 12-week period.
Each woman involved in the study was randomly provided with either a moisturizer product that contained a 5% concentration of niacinamide, or a moisturizer that lacked niacinamide completely. After the 12-week trial, the women who used the moisturizer containing niacinamide showed signs of improved aging and better skin compared to the women who used the placebo.
In a separate study conducted at the University of Seoul in South Korea, scientists examined the effects of vitamin B3 on a series of facial skin cells. They found that the cells exposed to vitamin B3 experienced less oxidative damage as a result of improved blood flow and increased capillary dilation, and were able to show an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles.
